What: 4-week continuing-level series for members of the LGBTQIA+ community

Olivia Nelson began dancing in 2013, focusing on ballroom and Latin dance styles. She discovered the joy of Lindy Hop in 2015 although it would take another two years to fall in love with jazz music.
-- All students must be pre-registered and pre-paid at least 1 hour before class. (Absolutely no walk-ins at this time)

In this 4-week unit, students will expand on what learned in their Intro to Swing class, with a focus on swing outs!
Because each class will build on the material in the previous class, registration is for the whole series only.
Students taking this class must have completed our 6-week Intro to Swing unit and/or be able to execute 6 & 8 count rhythms with triple steps, basic turns/side passes, lindy circles, yo-yos, and swingouts. (This unit is not appropriate for folks without some Lindy Hop experience)
This class is a Rotating Partner class, and students will change partners throughout class. No partner is required to sign up.
About your instructors:
While Mattie Kelly began dancing Lindy Hop in 2013, she fell in love with swing dancing long before that (specifically, while watching Swing Kids in her high school World History class). Since then, it has gloriously taken over her life, and she's pretty happy about that.
An educator by profession, Mattie knows that it takes more than technical skill to be an effective teacher. She is adept at meeting people where they are and encouraging growth from any skill level. As a teacher, Mattie is candid, adaptable, and the right amount of goofy.
Outside of the classroom, you can find Mattie solo dancing in most situations-- whether it's improvising on the social floor, practicing drills in the studio, or choreographing and performing with her teammates. If you really want to get her going, ask Mattie about her favorite version of Splanky.

She finds power in the collaborative conversation of Lindy Hop, especially being able to express musicality and individual voice as a follow. Olivia delights in playing with rhythm variations and believes you can never have too many sugar pushes!
COVID Safety for In-Studio Classes

(Disposable masks will be available should you forget to bring your own)
Additional safety measures: our studio is equipped with 4 HEPA/UVC air purifiers to help keep the air refreshed for you!

All RVA Swing classes require proof of up-to-date vaccination prior to registration & our registration form is password protected.
If you would like the password to register for this class, please email RVAswing@gmail.com and provide:
- a photo or scan of your vaccination card showing a 2022 or 2023 dose (name & dates must be legible)
If you have multiple cards, we only need to see the one with the most recent dose.
- your preferred name, if you go by something different than the first name on the documents (trans friends, don't worry, we got u)
RVA Swing will delete your images once we have added you to our vaccinated students list and you'll be all set for all future classes & events. We will not share, disclose, or disseminate your information to any 3rd party. If you're brand new to the studio, please be prepared to show ID at your first class or event so we can match it with your vaccine info.
Providing falsified or misleading vaccine information will result in a lifetime ban from all RVA Swing events.
