What is Vintage Jazz? What is Solo Jazz?

"Vintage jazz" refers to the music of the 20's & 30's and to the dances typically done to that music.  As swing dancers, we often refer to anything you dance to jazz music without a partner as "solo jazz."

Swing dancing, jazz dance, and jazz music are all art forms created by Black Americans in the early decades of the 20th century.  Swing dancing is richly intertwined with solo jazz and both forms of dancing influence each other greatly.

In the modern Lindy Hop community, we seek to honor & learn both facets of the dance and consider solo jazz to be an integral part of the broader canvas of partnered dancing. These dances weren't created in a vacuum and so we seek to include the history and social context of swing and jazz dance in our lessons at RVA Swing.

About the class & the routine:

Learn the iconic Dean Collins Shim Sham in this extended series.  This is a super cool, calm, & collected Shim Sham, but it is hella intricate, so we're scheduling plenty of time to learn at a gentle pace.  Some previous dance experience is recommended, but your teacher will break down every step used in the choreography, so that all levels can participate.

Our studio is small & so advance registration is required (no walk-ins at this time).
