What is Vintage Jazz? What is Solo Jazz?

"Vintage jazz" refers to the music of the 20's & 30's and to the dances typically done to that music.  As swing dancers, we often refer to anything you dance to jazz music without a partner as "solo jazz."

Swing dancing, jazz dance, and jazz music are all art forms created by Black Americans in the early decades of the 20th century.  Swing dancing is richly intertwined with solo jazz and both forms of dancing influence each other greatly.

In the modern Lindy Hop community, we seek to honor & learn both facets of the dance and consider solo jazz to be an integral part of the broader canvas of partnered dancing. These dances weren't created in a vacuum and so we seek to include the history and social context of swing and jazz dance in our lessons at RVA Swing.

About the class & the routine:

The Big Apple is a group jazz dance choreographed by Frankie Manning for the film Keep Punchin'

This routine is a fast, high-energy romp that is always full of laughs and is a showcase for lots of classic jazz moves.

Some basic jazz experience (like Charleston, half breaks/full breaks, etc) will be very helpful in learning this challenging routine, but all skill levels are welcome in this class.

FYI: This routine, while mostly solo movement, does involve some brief partnered elements that involve close interaction between students.

You can choose to learn in-studio or online via Zoom/class recordings.

In studio spaces are limited & masks are required if taking class in person.

About your instructors:

Mike Herring
is a tap and swing dancer, instructor, and choreographer with 30 years of experience. He started out doing shows in his living room at age 6 after watching the chimney sweep scene in Mary Poppins too many times.

Since then he has performed with the Boston Tap Company, DrumatiX, Ash Lawn Opera, the Charlottesville Ballet, Wilson School of Dance, the Greater Boston Stage Company, SwingCville, ACME Swing Mfg. Co, and Boston Lindy Hop. He has taught at many regional events such as Jammin on the James and The Process, as well as being a featured performer at Lindy Focus.

Erica Vess owns & operates the RVA Swing studio & has been teaching Lindy Hop, Balboa & Jazz in Richmond since 2012. Known for her patient, clear instruction and A+ joke skills, her primary goal is creating a safe, fun, & supportive learning environment for all students.

Erica is essentially the TA on this class: she'll be (wo)manning the Zoom chat and demonstrating the partnered elements with Mike. This is her....4th? time learning the Big apple and she really hope it sticks this time. 😂
