What is Vintage Jazz? What is Solo Jazz?

"Vintage jazz" refers to the music of the 20's & 30's and to the dances typically done to that music.  As swing dancers, we often refer to anything you dance to jazz music without a partner as "solo jazz."

Swing dancing, jazz dance, and jazz music are all art forms created by Black Americans in the early decades of the 20th century.  Swing dancing is richly intertwined with solo jazz and both forms of dancing influence each other greatly.

In the modern Lindy Hop community, we seek to honor & learn both facets of the dance and consider solo jazz to be an integral part of the broader canvas of partnered dancing. These dances weren't created in a vacuum and so we seek to include the history and social context of swing and jazz dance in our lessons at RVA Swing.

About the class & the routine:

Get ready to laugh, sweat, and be silly! This month, we'll be learning Abigail Browning's high energy Charleston routine: Gangbusters.

This routine is a wild romp through all the classic Charleston vocabulary, and is a great routine for intermediate dancers or for motivated beginners looking for a fun challenge.

While some previous jazz experience will make learning the routine easier, your instructor will break down every step as we go through the choreography, so no dance experience is required.

In studio spaces are limited: boosted COVID vaccination & masks are required if taking class in person.

Video recordings are also available for students who wish to learn remotely.

Advance registration is required (no walk-ins).
