About the class:

Did you just finish Lindy 2A: Swingouts & Turns and are ready for more new things?

Or maybe you've done some Lindy Hop in the past and want to dust off your Charleston?

Join Cate & Marlene for 4 weeks of basic Charleston.  They'll share some tips & tricks to improve your dancing, and of course, teach you some sweet new moves. In this level, we will start to really focus on how moves work & how to refine our partnership skills.

This unit will focus on teaching novice students how to do side-by-side Lindy Charleston, as well as some common Charleston moves.  Most instructors also spend a little time in each class on practicing  swingouts, tuck-turns and other basic Lindy Hop skills from Level 2A.

Please note that Charleston involves a lot of hopping & kicking and so it is cardio-intensive.  We recommend that students taking this class be able to perform activities like a brisk jog for 1 to 3 minutes at a time, as well as be able to hold their balance while standing on one leg.

Students taking this class should have completed a 6-week RVA Swing Intro to Swing unit as well as 1 unit of Lindy 2A OR, at minimum, must be able to correctly demonstrate 6 and 8 count Lindy rhythms with triple steps, basic inside/outside turns, and a lindy phrase (aka 3 swingouts & a circle)

Important Level Stuff:

--If you have only learned 6-count swing (what most ballroom studios call "East Coast Swing") you will need to complete our Intro to Swing Dancing series before taking any Level 2 class at RVA Swing.

--If you are struggling with stuff from your Intro or Level 2A class (especially footwork/rhythm) you should take the Intro level or 2A again before attempting more Level 2 classes.

--Never done any Charleston before? You MUST come to the first class to take this series.

This class is a standard Rotating Partner class, and students will change partners throughout class.

About your instructors:

Cate Rauschenberger started ballroom dancing in Georgia in 2006, but it wasn't until 2014 that the music, community, and capacity for expression of lindy hop stole her heart.

She is passionate about the multi-directional aspect of communication in partner dancing-- the conversation between musicians and dancers through the music, between a couple and anyone observing them, and between the lead and follow themselves. She loves and strives for balanced connections, playful improvisation, and musically-inspired movement in her dancing.

As a teacher, she enjoys breaking things down, building them back up, and seeing those joyful, dance "aha!" moments.   (Cate habla espaƱol tambien!)

Marlene McGraw
started dancing in late 2019 and has been enthusiastically working on leading and following across several types of swing dance since. She has a passion for making learning fun and supportive for folks starting out and providing clear and approachable instruction.
